PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — More than 1,000 Boy Scouts from northwest Oregon started planting 140,000 flags Thursday at Willamette National Cemetery to decorate the graves of veterans for Memorial Day.

It’s a 42-year tradition for Scouts to place a small U.S. flag at every marker in the Portland cemetery.

The Oregonian reports that some of the men buried there were once Scouts who planted flags. One is Jeremy Christensen, a soldier from Multnomah County who was killed by a roadside bomb in 2004 in Iraq.
