La Center’s Zach Olivera went a foot higher than he’s gone all season in the pole vault. Stevenson’s Austin McCrum has gone a foot higher this season than what he did on Saturday.

But they both came away from the Class 1A state track and field meet in Cheney as state champions.

McCrum, who had the state’s best mark in the pole vault for 1A athletes this season at 15-1, could not get past 14-0 on Saturday at Eastern Washington University.

Olivera, who came into the meet with the second-best 1A mark of 13-0, set a personal best by also clearing 14-0.

McCrum and Olivera were co-state champions in the pole vault.

Meanwhile in the girls 1A, La Center’s could not muster enough points to take the team title. The Wildcats, who led after Friday’s events, finished fourth with 45 points. Bellevue Christian won the team title with 63 points.

Katrina Chamberlain contributed eight more points to La Center’s total by placing second in the high jump, clearing 5-2. Lauren Baker was eighth at 4-10.

Baker placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.66). Meagan Governor was fourth in the 1,600 (5:30.97) and Amanda Blankenship was seventh (5:33.01).

In other events, La Center’s Kyle Kosak was sixth in the boys 800 (2:00.71).
