Hudson’s Bay High School is looking for a new football coach.

Steve Stebbins, who has led the Eagles the past three seasons, resigned last week. He told his players Thursday that he has accepted a teaching job in southern Oregon in order to move closer to his wife’s family.

“I really enjoyed the kids,” said Stebbins, who will be a teacher and an assistant football and baseball coach at South Umpqua High School in Myrtle Creek, Ore. “I had a positive experience with them. I will miss them. I think we got better. We had some opportunities last year that we just missed on.”

“We’ve been pleased with his work here,” said Jeanne Shults, the athletic director at Hudson’s Bay.

Spring football drills, which could have started as early as Tuesday, have been pushed back a week, Shults said. Assistant coaches will help organize and run the drills, preparing the players for team camp.

Shults said the school will go through the district’s normal procedure of hiring a new coach, but she hopes the process will move quickly because football season is fast approaching.

“I do feel bad about the lateness of it,” Stebbins said. “I just got the (South Umpqua) job. Sometimes tough decisions don’t come at the best times.”
