EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon strawberry growers are getting a little tired of the rain.
The Register-Guard in Eugene says a cool, wet spring is to blame for a slow-growing crop of Oregon strawberries. Growers say they’re hoping for a dry stretch of weather so the fruit ripens and they can begin picking in the next week or two.
Oregon State University extension agent Ross Penhallegon says that once they ripen, strawberries need warm dry weather or they rot quickly. Still, he says the crop looks good and the first of the berries should be ready to pick within the next two weeks.
