It’s official: Eric Holmes is Vancouver’s new city manager.

The city council approved his contract Monday night, making him an at-will employee subject to annual council review of his performance.

Holmes, the former assistant city manager, will earn $161,500 a year plus benefits. As of April, he earned $122,868 a year; outgoing city manager Pat McDonnell earned $171,650 annually after a decade in the job. Prior to being named as assistant city manager in April, Holmes had worked as the city’s economic development director since 2007. He was also city manager of Battle Ground for five years.

“It’s an honor to serve as your city manager and I look forward to it,” Holmes told the council after they unanimously approved his position.

Mayor Tim Leavitt also read a proclamation Monday for McDonnell, praising him for his years of service.

McDonnell thanked them for the recognition, and called the profession of public service “noble.”

“At times you’re a lightning rod, sometimes more than you’d like,” he said, adding that Holmes will be “an outstanding city manager. He’s going to be amazingly successful.”
