TORONTO (AP) — Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf is out four to six weeks after surgery to repair a “significant” laceration on his left leg.

The 25-year-old defenseman was injured in the second period of Tuesday night’s 3-2 loss to Ottawa when he got tangled up awkwardly with Senators forward Peter Regin. Phaneuf needed help to reach the team’s dressing room and had surgery later that night, the team said Wednesday.

The injury came shortly after Leafs GM Brian Burke met with reporters during the first intermission to express his disappointment at fans who booed Phaneuf during a 2-0 loss to the Rangers on Saturday. Phaneuf has four assists and a minus-6 rating in 11 games this season.

The Maple Leafs recalled Korbinian Holzer from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL to fill in.
