BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have hired Curt Young to be their pitching coach.

The 50-year-old Young was the pitching coach in Oakland for the last seven seasons. He helped the A’s post an American League-best 3.56 ERA this season. They also led the league with 17 shutouts and allowed the fewest hits (1,315) and runs (626).

Young replaces John Farrell, who left Boston last month to become Toronto’s new manager.

The Red Sox announced Young’s arrival on Tuesday. General manager Theo Epstein says “pitchers who have worked with Curt swear by him, and the results speak for themselves.”

Young played for Oakland, Kansas City and the New York Yankees in 11 seasons in the majors, going 69-53 with a 4.31 ERA in 251 games, 162 starts.
