CHICAGO (AP) — The Cubs say Ryne Sandberg will not return as manager of Triple-A Iowa next season.

General manager Jim Hendry said in a conference call from Arizona on Wednesday that the Hall of Fame second baseman would “always be welcome” in Chicago.

Sandberg spent the past four years managing in the Cubs’ farm system. He was among the leading candidates for the opening created by Lou Piniella’s retirement. But Chicago instead elevated interim manager Mike Quade to the permanent job last month after he managed the team through the final weeks of the season.

The Cubs also announced two coaches. Pat Listach will be Quade’s bench coach and Dave Keller was named major league staff assistant.
