The Hockinson girls soccer team might be young, but the Hawks responded like veterans in their district semifinal match with Tumwater on Tuesday at District Stadium in Battle Ground.

Kavita Battan scored in the opening seconds and again in the final few seconds to give Hockinson a 2-1 victory, sending the Hawks back to the Class 2A state playoffs.

Battan opened the scoring by converting a breakaway in the first 30 seconds of the match, finishing a pass from Jenna Haagen. Battan then provided the winning margin by converting a penalty kick after she was tackled from behind in the penalty area a few seconds before the final whistle.

Hockinson (13-4-1) will face Black Hills on Thursday for the district title. The time and location for that match were not available late Tuesday.

“I was particularly pleased with the first half. Our team play was some of the best we’ve had all season,” Hockinson coach Vic Oenning said.

The coach also was pleased with the defensive effort against a Tumwater team with two dangerous forwards.

The Thunderbirds tied the match with about 15 minutes remaining. But given the chance to win it from the penalty spot, Battan converted.

Oenning noted that his squad has no seniors and four juniors.

Black Hills def. Washougal — The visiting Wolves outscored the Panthers 4-3 in a penalty-kick shootout to win the district semifinal at Fishback Stadium. The game was a scoreless tie before the tiebreaker, which took eight penalty kicks from each team to settle.

Washougal falls into a loser-out match Thursday against Mark Morris. Win there, and the Panthers will play again Saturday for the district’s No. 3 slot in the Class 2A state tournament.

Mountain View 4, Kelso 2 — Erin O’Hara scored three consecutive goals, leading the Thunder to a 4-2 win over Kelso in a Class 3A elimination game.

The win advances the Thunder to a bi-district playoff Saturday at Sumner High School against an opponent to be determined.

Meesha Godbole also scored for Mountain View, which led 1-0 at halftime. Serena Waltz made seven saves in the win.

In other bi-district playoff matches Saturday, league champion Camas will host a match at 2:30 p.m. at Doc Harris Stadium, Prairie plays at 11 a.m. in Sumner, and Columbia River plays at 1 p.m. in Burien.

King’s Way Christian 3, Ocosta 1 — Emily Ehline scored early and Jenna Kainu scored late, helping King’s Way advance to the Class B District 4 championship match Saturday.

Jessica Roy also scored for the Knights, who led 2-1 at halftime.

Napavine 7, Seton Catholic 0 — Seton’s season ended with a Class B playoff loss.
