Lightweight kites will fly indoors, with routines set to music, this weekend at the Camas Indoor Kite Festival. Indoor kite fliers from throughout the United States will attend. A panel of judges will grade the flights on how well the flier interprets the music, how well they fly their kite and the showmanship of the routine. Other activities include open flying time, lessons and kite-making for children.

One of the festival’s notable participants is Connor Doran, who flew kites and was a semi-finalist on the NBC television series “America’s Got Talent.”

When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The kite festival is one of several seasonal weekend entertainment options in Clark County and Portland. Others include a parade to honor veterans, a concert from the Misty Mamas and a film that brings together two unlikely co-stars.

1. Parade celebrates history, honors veterans, boasts new route

The Veterans Parade at Fort Vancouver sports a new route this year but continues to honor those who have served and to celebrate Vancouver’s history. About 2,500 individuals will march, including veterans and active members of the military, high school marching bands, and Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.

Royce Pollard, former mayor of Vancouver and commanding officer at the Vancouver Barracks, will be grand marshal.

The parade’s theme is “Honoring the Buffalo Soldiers’ Service at Vancouver Barracks,” which is an homage to the black soldiers who served in the U.S. Army at the Vancouver Barracks between 1870 and 1900.
