Weather Eye: It has been raining, and it’s raining again around Clark County

As of early Saturday afternoon, rainfall totals for this time of year were running slightly behind the average in Vancouver, but I’m sure Saturday night’s storm made a dent in that deficit and put them above average once again.

The good news for those who enjoy wintery weather is that freezing levels finally are dropping, leaving a fresh coat of snow in the ski areas and down to mountain pass levels.

Let’s look back to October and see how much rain was recorded by our friends and neighbors around the region.

Gary Collins, Brush Prairie, 6.46 inches; Murphy Dennis, near Clark Rifles shooting range in Brush Prairie, 8.20 inches; Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 8.24 inches;

Tyler Mode, Minnehaha, 4.74 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 4.21 inches; Irv St. Germain, Southwest Prune Hill, 5.85 inches;

Bob Starr, Cougar,10.07 inches; Pete Conrad, Battle Ground, 4.72 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lakeshore, 4.22 inches; Phil Delany, above Dole Valley, 9.7 inches; Phil Harris, Washougal, 6.3 inches; Bill Sobolewski, Livingston Mountain, 7.69 inches; Bud Maddux, Home Valley, 6.5 inches; Chuck Houghten, Hockinson Heights, 5.59 inches;

Nancy Ellifrit, Mount Vista, 5.4 inches; Sandy Nesvick, East Vancouver, 5.25 inches; Larry Lebsack, Northeast Hazel Dell, 5.66 inches; Merle Moore, two miles west of Yacolt, 7.62 inches; Dave Campbell, one mile west of Heisson, 5.27 inches; Tom Dixon, Amboy, 6.3 inches; and Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 4.9 inches.

We had a short break from the rain showers Saturday, which gave me enough time to get my errands done without getting wet. But as I write this column around 5 p.m., it is once again raining. I thought it would hold off until after sunset, but it is the timing that always gets weather forecasters.

I will leave you will this bit of November verse:

November comes,

And November goes,

With the last red berries

And the first white snows.

With night coming early,

And dawn coming late,

And ice in the bucket

And frost by the gate.

The fires burn,

And the kettles sing,

And earth sinks to rest

Until next spring.
