Jurors ‘horrified’ by Conn. home invasion evidence

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — The foreman of a jury that sentenced a Connecticut man to death for a deadly home invasion says jurors were “disgusted” and “horrified” by the evidence.

Thirty-five-year-old New Haven resident Ian Cassell (KAH’-sel) tells The Associated Press some jurors were initially “on the fence” about whether to sentence Steven Hayes to life in prison or death. But he says the evidence ultimately persuaded all jurors to vote Monday for death.

He says jurors were divided over the 47-year-old Hayes’ claim he wanted a death sentence but that argument didn’t play a big role in the deliberations.

Hayes was convicted last month of killing a suburban woman and her two daughters in 2007. The woman was strangled. Her two daughters were tied to their beds and left to die in a gasoline-fueled fire.

Hayes’ co-defendant faces trial next year.
