Community notebook: CCYF crowns five season champions

The 28th Clark County Youth Football season concluded on Saturday with five championship games at Washougal High School, four of them decided by less than a touchdown.

In the division for players in grades 4-5, the East Vancouver Thunder won the championship in overtime against the La Center Crushers, 33-32.

Another one-point game was played in the division for players in grades 2-3, with the West Vancouver Sharks edging the Woodland Beavers, 27-26.

In the division for eighth-graders, the East Vancouver Thunder prevailed over the West Vancouver Vikings, 22-18.

In the seventh-grade division, the Hockinson Hawks edged the East Vancouver Thunder, 13-7.

The only game that wasn’t decided by less than one touchdown was the sixth-grade final, in which the Battle Ground Tigers downed the West Vancouver Chieftains, 22-6.

Pop Warner finals set

Southwest Washington Pop Warner will stage three championship games, and two games for third place, on Sunday at District Stadium in Battle Ground.

In the Junior Pee Wee Division, the unbeaten North County Wildcats will take on the 3-4 Evergreen Bulldogs for the title at 1 p.m.

In the Pee Wee Division, the North County Wildcats (8-0) take on the Vancouver Warriors (7-1) at 3 p.m. In the Junior Midget Division, the East County Jets (4-1) take on the Vancouver Warriors (2-4) at 5 p.m.

Winners of the championship games qualify to play in the Division II regional playoff games on Nov. 20 and Nov. 27 at Santa Clara, Calif. Regional champions advance to the Pop Warner Super Bowl at Orlando, Fla., in December.

The second- and third-place teams from Southwest Washington Pop Warner will participate in the Northwest Classic at Spokane.

The Southwest Washington Pop Warner semifinal games were played on Sunday in Battle Ground. In the Junior Pee Wee Division, North County defeated East County 21-6, and Evergreen beat Cowlitz 41-14. In the Pee Wee semifinals, the North County Wildcats beat the Evergreen Bulldogs 23-0, and the Vancouver Warriors beat the East County Jets 12-0.

Pop Warner uses an age-weight grid to determine the division for players.

The Junior Pee Wee Division is for players ages 8-10 who weigh 60-105 pounds, and for 11-year-olds who weigh 60-80 pounds. The Pee Wee Division is for players 9-11 who weigh 75-120 pounds, and for 12-year-olds who weigh 75-100 pounds. The Junior Midget Division is for players 10-12 weighing 85-135, and 13-year-olds weighing 85-115.

NYC Marathon results

At least 25 runners from Clark County completed the New York City Marathon on Sunday.

Dave Sobolik from Camas was the fastest finisher from Southwest Washington. He completed the 26.2-mile footrace in 2 hours, 50 minutes and 39 seconds, making him the 376th runner to finish.

Adult-Youth bowling event continues

One weekend remains in the 22nd Clark County Adult-Youth Doubles Bowling Tournament. The United States Bowling Congress-sanctioned tournament is being held at Husted’s Hazel Dell Lanes.

The tournament is open to all youths who are current members of the Clark County USBC. There are six divisions based on the average scores of the youth bowler. Leading the top-division for averages of 175 and higher is the team of Katryn Comeau and Paul Comeau with a score of 1,477 including a handicap of 384 pins.

Squads are scheduled for noon and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday to conclude the tournament. To register or to learn more, contact Hazel Dell Lanes at 360-694-8364, or the Clark County USBC at 360-694-6348.

Bowl for Homes slated

The local Habitat for Humanity chapter will hold a bowling event to raise funds on Nov. 21 at Allen’s Crosley Lanes in Vancouver.

The Bowl for Homes event begins at 2 p.m. and is open to adult and youths. Cost to bowl is $20 for three games. Participants who collect at least $50 in pledges can bowl for free.
