With or without Selby, Jayhawks will be formidable

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — They lost two NBA lottery picks and the winningest player in the program’s storied history. So, naturally, everyone expects Kansas to take a big tumble this season.

Big 12 coaches aren’t so sure: They’ve picked the Jayhawks to finish second this year and Kansas is ranked No. 7 in the national preseason poll.

It all seems a step down from last year, when 6-11 center Cole Aldrich, team leader Sherron Collins and freshman star Xavier Henry led the team to a 33-3 record. All three are gone.

But the Jayhawks will have twins Marcus and Markieff Morris back for their junior season. They will also have guard Tyshawn Taylor as well as Tyrel Reed and 7-footer Jeff Withey.

The big question is whether the NCAA will clear freshman point guard Josh Selby to play.
