ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — Albany Democrat-Herald publisher Martha Wells says she plans to retire at the end of the year.

The 61-year-old Wells announced her plans Thursday to employees of the Democrat-Herald and the Gazette-Times of Corvallis. As regional executive for Lee Enterprises of Davenport, Iowa, which owns the Gazette-Times, Democrat-Herald and the Lebanon Express, she has been publisher in Albany and Lebanon, and group manager of the Corvallis Gazette-Times, since 2001.

Wells previously worked as an executive for Lee in Billings, Mont., and Mason City and Ottumwa, Iowa. She has served as president of the Associated Press Newspaper Executives of Oregon, the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association and the association’s foundation.
