In our view: Cheers & Jeers

Would you really want Mickey Mouse to be your next U.S. senator?

Cheers: To building better bridges, or, at least, repairing them. Five Clark County bridges will receive much-needed work after the Public Works Department received $3.25 million in federal bridge money. The county owns 81 bridges, and without awards such as this one, it would be impossible to keep them all in good repair. The bridges targeted for improvement are the Cougar Creek Bridge on Washougal River Road; the Daybreak Bridge northwest of Battle Ground; the Dayton Bridge across Cedar Creek on Northeast Pup Creek Road; the J.C. Ward Bridge across Salmon Creek north of Hockinson; and Pleasant Valley Bridge across Salmon Creek, near WSU Vancouver. Even in a recession, it’s important to keep our infrastructure from becoming dangerous or much more costly to repair later. Jeers: To Sen. Mickey Mouse and County Auditor Donald Duck. Long after the election is over, workers in the county auditor’s office were still hand-tallying nearly 16,000 write-in votes for silly candidates including cartoon characters, sports stars and Donald Trump. “The ballot is not the place to be amusing or clever or communicate how funny you think you are,” says county Auditor Greg Kimsey, whose staff has to count those worthless votes by hand. Write-in votes can be important — notably, former Vancouver Congresswoman Linda Smith once won a write-in campaign — but abusing that privilege just costs the serious voters money.
