KENNEWICK — Camas coach Julie Nidick felt good about her team’s chances up 2-1 on Seattle Prep in Friday’s first round of the 3A state volleyball tournament.

Unfortunately for the Papermakers, that’s about the time Sydney Trammell started feeling not so well.

The senior middle blocker came down with a fever the morning of the team’s opening match, and it returned with a vengeance during the fourth set.

With Trammell sidelined, Seattle Prep’s hitters took control, and the Panthers rallied to upset the No. 4-ranked Papermakers, 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 15-12.

Camas, which placed seventh a year ago, can still finish as high as fifth by winning three matches in the consolation bracket today, starting against Capital of Olympia at 9:30 a.m.

“When you get to this tournament, sometimes it’s the luck of the draw, and sometimes it’s the luck of the timing of certain things,” Nidick said. “Sydney’s our top blocker, and without a block against a team like that, it’s difficult to play defense.”

The Papermakers came into the tournament riding high after winning the West Central/Southwest Bi-Districts last weekend.

After cruising through the first set, Camas watched Prep rally to win the second, then rallied itself to take the third and seemingly take control.

That all changed when Trammell left the match, forcing Nidick to change her defensive scheme on the fly.

“The girls played with heart and gave it everything they had,” Nidick said. “But it’s hard when you have to make adjustments at this point without your best blocker.”

All-state outside hitter Gabby Bird-Vogel had 25 kills, and middle Olivia Magill added 15 for Prep, ranked No. 10 by The Seattle Times.

“They’re definitely the ones who did the most damage,” Nidick said. “We were not underestimating Seattle Prep at all. We knew they were a good team, and on this day, they were better than us. We’ll just have to go back, regroup, and push to finish as high as we can.”

Brindl Langley led Camas with 15 kills, 23 digs and three aces. Stefani Sorensen added 14 kills and 23 digs, while Marleen de Zoete had 44 assists and 20 digs.
