Drake pulls away in 2nd half for 60-46 victory

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ryan Wedel scored 20 points and Aaron Hawley had 15 as Drake defeated Texas Southern 60-46 in the season opener for both Saturday night.

Seth VanDeest added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs, who won despite shooting only 34.5 percent.

Harrison Smith led the Tigers with 12 points while Lawrence Johnson-Danner finished with 10. Texas Southern shot poorly as well, finishing at 39 percent.

Drake led 30-26 with 15:59 to play before pulling away with a 15-2 run. Hawley started the run with five straight points and Rayvonte Rice ended it with a three-point play, putting the Bulldogs ahead 45-28 with 10:07 remaining. Drake built its lead as high as 22.

Neither team led by more than six in the first half and Drake went into intermission up 26-21.
