Hockinson’s Julia Sanders added two more state titles and another meet record to her swimming résumé Friday at the Class 2A state championships in Federal Way.

Sanders, a sophomore, defended her state title in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.73 seconds. The mark broke her own meet record set last year of 56.88 seconds. Sanders easily outdistanced Prosser’s Mackenzie Grant, who was second in 59.92 seconds.

Sumner freshman Madison Munger, another title contender in the 100 fly who had the second-best qualifying time in Thursday’s prelims, was disqualified in the finals.

Sanders also won her first state title in the 50 freestyle. After entering Friday’s finals as the No. 2 qualifier, Sanders shaved 0.43 seconds off her qualifying time to win in 23.90 seconds. Top qualifier Sami Hendricks of Sumner was second in 24.43.

Last season, Sanders won state titles in the 100 fly and 200 individual medley.

Sanders also swam the anchor led on Hockinson’s 400 free relay team which moved three spots up from its qualifying position to place fifth in 3:51.84. Also on the team were Darien Hiller, Makela Carrsow and Bailee Christenson.

That same quartet also placed seventh in the 200 medley relay in 1:59.92.

Christenson also cut her qualifying time by two seconds in the 500 freestyle finals, placing fifth in 5:28.48.

As a team, Hockinson placed 10th overall with 114 points.

3A meet — Jessica Bottelberghe and Monica Bottelberghe of Columbia and Nikki Cannon of Hudson’s Bay put themselves in good position to compete for state titles today with solid efforts Friday in preliminary heats.

Jessica Bottelberghe posted the fastest qualifying in the 100 butterfly in 57.28 seconds, and she had the No. 2 qualifying mark in the 200 individual medley (2:07.04).

Monica Bottelberghe was the top qualifier in the 100 freestyle (52.51) and the second qualifier in the 200 freestyle (1:53.19).

Cannon, looking to defend her state title, is the No. 2 qualifier in the 100 backstroke (57.72). Cannon also qualified seventh in the 50 freestyle. Columbia River’s 400 free relay team had the top qualifying time (3:39.93) and the Chieftains’ 200 free relay was second best (1:40.61).

Also advancing to today’s championship finals were the Hudson’s Bay 200 medley relay (seventh), Mountain View’s Peggy Liang in the 50 free (fifth) and 100 free (sixth), Carly Cannon of Hudson’s Bay in the 100 backstroke (eighth)
