ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Curtis Dennis scored 12 points and Alex Kirk recorded a double-double in his college debut Saturday to lead New Mexico to a 63-54 victory over Detroit.

Eli Holman had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Titans, who trailed by more than 20 points midway through the second half in the season opener for both teams. But Detroit took advantage of some uneven New Mexico play down the stretch to trim the lead.

The game was sloppy throughout, with the teams combining for 40 turnovers.\

The shooting was also spotty, especially from the outside. New Mexico was 3 for 20 on 3-point attempts and Detroit went 4 for 22.

Kirk, a 6-foot-11 freshman, finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
