The National Park Service will help local park planners develop a “water trail” for kayakers and canoeists between Vancouver Lake, Lake River, the Columbia and the lower end of the Lewis River.

The Lake and Lewis rivers enter the Columbia at nearly the same point, near the tip of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.

The Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation Department will use a technical assistance grant from the National Park Service over the next year to plan a water trail for recreational nonmotorized boaters.

“It’s looking at what is the need and what additional facilities or amenities are needed,” said parks manager Jane Tesner Kleiner.

The plan could identify a need for more boat launches, better signs, or products such as brochures, guides and maps.

Parks officials figure the federal assistance is worth about $35,000 in staff time.
