Nashville, Tenn. (AP) — Freshman reserve Stephanie Holzer had 20 points and 11 rebounds and No. 24 Vanderbilt opened its season with an 80-55 victory over Howard on Sunday.

Holzer was 5 of 6 from the field and 10 for 11 at the free-throw line and was one-third of the freshman trio who paced the Commodores.

Along with Holzer, Christina Foggie scored 14 points and Jasmine Lister had 13. Sophomore Angelo Puleo added 11 points as Vanderbilt won without All-Southeastern Conference first-team selection Jence Rhoads (hamstring), who averaged 13.8 points a game last season.

Saadia Doyle had 30 points and 10 rebounds for Howard.

The Commodores (1-0) used a 22-3 run in the first half to pull away from Howard (0-2). Foggie scored eight points and Vanderbilt hit five 3-pointers during the stretch to take a 25-8 lead with 12:43 remaining before halftime.
