ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — British sprint specialist Mark Cavendish will compete in his first Tour Down Under in January.

Organizers said that the 15-time Tour de France stage winner will race for the HTC Highroad team in the Jan. 16-23 stage race in South Australia.

Race director Mike Turtur said on Tuesday that Cavendish was “undoubtedly one of, if not the best sprinter in the world.”

Americans Lance Armstrong and Tyler Farrar, and Andre Greipel of Germany also will compete in the opening event of the 2011 Pro Tour season.

Cavendish also has five stage wins in the Giro d’Italia, and won four legs in this year’s Spanish Vuelta to capture the race’s combined points crown. Cavendish also won the Milan-San Remo race in 2009.
