JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — Army prosecutors have told a military hearing that a Boise, Idaho, soldier should face a court-martial in a plot that killed an Afghan civilian. But a defense lawyer says 20-year-old Pfc. Andrew Holmes was following a team leader’s order to fire, and questions whether Holmes’ bullets hit the victim.
Holmes is among five soldiers accused of killing three Afghan civilians earlier this year in Kandahar Province. Holmes is charged with one count of premeditated murder.
On Monday, Holmes told the Army’s investigating officer that he did not commit murder.
Defense lawyer Daniel Conway is pushing the Army to release a photo of Holmes kneeling by the victim. The lawyer wants experts to examine the photo to determine how the man died. The Army says another soldier hurled a grenade at the victim.
