WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) — James Hett scored 16 points and hit the winning free throw with 1 second left to give Monmouth a 69-68 victory over Lehigh on Friday night.

The Hawks (1-1), who trailed by nine at halftime, closed the gap to 36-35 on four straight layups by Ed Waite and took the lead at 44-42 on a Hett 3-pointer with 13:31 to go.

C.J. McCollum hit four jumpers in a row during a 13-2 Lehigh spurt for a 60-56 lead with 4:49 left.

Hett’s 3 with 38 seconds to go got Monmouth to 67-66, then Lehigh’s Mackey Knight hit 1 of 2 free throws for a 68-66 edge.

Mike Myers Keitt’s two foul shots tied the game with 17 seconds left. After McCollum missed a 3-point attempt and Monmouth got the rebound, Michael Ojo fouled Hett just before the buzzer. Hett missed his first free throw but made the second.

Waite led Monmouth with 20 points. Ojo scored 23 for Lehigh (1-2), while McCollum added 19.
