Wrong-way driver alleged to have been drunk

Troopers working to keep drunks off Clark County highways have been busy lately, but they had their hands full Friday when an alleged drunken driver went six miles on the wrong side of state Highway 14.

The driver, whose name was not released, travelled the wrong way from Interstate 5 to near Interstate 205, where her car broke down, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The woman was found in her stopped car, facing the wrong way in the inside lane. She was arrested on suspicion of DUI with a breath alcohol level of 0.201 percent, 2½ times the legal limit.

The WSP said the woman told troopers she thought she was headed for state Highway 500, en route to her home in Camas. Highway 500 is about 5 miles north of where she thought she was.

The arrest came as the WSP continued its holiday campaign against intoxicated drivers. Three extra troopers and a supervisor are assigned to concentrate their efforts during high-target times. They augment troopers normally working at night.

Since Oct. 13, the WSP statement said, the DUI Team in Vancouver has arrested 73 intoxicated drivers in 53 individual shifts. The team has contacted 479 violators for various traffic and other violations.

Additionally, the team seized three handguns from motorists who were under the influence and in possession of the firearms, a violation in this state.

The WSP called on revelers to designate a driver and cautioned drivers to travel in the right lane when they can, both day and night. Chances are that wrong-way drivers will be encountered in the inside, or fast, lane.
