GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Soccer authorities in Scotland are trying to avoid a strike by referees.
The referees have been criticized by the clubs for their recent performances. Thirty-one officials at a meeting Sunday voted in favor of refusing assignments for games this weekend. Two other referees were absent.
The Scottish Football Association calls the action a “sad day for Scottish football”.
SFA President George Peat says his group will do “everything we possibly can to broker a deal before the weekend because it’s obviously important that officials are on duty on Saturday and Sunday.”
