A team of middle school runners from Vancouver placed second at the United States Track and Field Junior Olympics Cross Country Region 13 Championships on Saturday.

The Evergreen Storm placed second in the division for girls ages 12-13 behind a Seattle-area team sponsored by Oiselle. The result qualifies the team to compete at the USATF National Junior Olympics in two weeks at Hoover, Ala.

Alexis Fuller led the way for the Storm in the Youth Girls Division, finishing fifth by completing the 4,000-meter course at Oregon City High School in 15 minutes, 34.5 seconds.

Other runners who scored team points for the Storm were Alexa Efraimson (10th, 15:52.10), Cassie McKinney (13th, 16:12.6), Nicole Goecke (21st, 16:28.7), Lexa Howell (29th, 16.52.8).

The Storm also had runners in the divisions for girls and boys ages 11-12. All of those results are listed in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

Presley Timmons of the Flanagan Clan Girls Track Club of Woodland placed fourth in the 10-and-younger 3,000-meter race. Her time was 13:30.

Timmons will not travel to nationals.

Taryk Boyd, a Skyridge Middle School eighth-grader running independently, placed 23rd in the race for boys ages 12-13. His time was 14:43. Boyd qualified for the regionals by placing 10th in the Oregon championships a week earlier.

Region 13 covers Washington, Oregon and northern Idaho.

Scott Slamp, organizer of the Evergreen Storm team, said Monday he is uncertain if the team or any of its runners will travel to Alabama for the nationals. He said the team, a non-profit organization, welcomes donations to help cover travel costs. Anyone interested in donating can contact Slamp at 360-521-5141.
