PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A dusting of snow arrived before the Thanksgiving holiday in the valleys of Western Oregon, where temperatures dipped below freezing to leave ice on the roads that slowed travel and commuting on Tuesday.

Some schools closed in the Portland metro area and parts of the Willamette Valley to the south, but Portland International Airport was open and flights were operating normally after crews worked through the night to de-ice runways.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation was moving to routine operations after preparing for snow that mostly stayed to the north of Oregon.

City officials warned about black ice on streets and sidewalks, and road crews were treating icy spots as needed.

Forecasters expected temperatures to return to normal for the holiday, with a high in the low 40s Thursday.
