Vancouver Public Schools’ board of directors has been named 2010 School Board of the Year by the Washington State School Directors’ Association.

The word came on Friday, during the state group’s annual conference in Spokane.

Vancouver was selected from among 15 school boards chosen as boards of distinction, including the Evergreen district board.

The volunteer panels were honored for effective use of the Washington School Board Standards adopted in 2009, which promote research-based oversight that leads to high levels of student and district performance.

Applicants submitted an essay and other evidence to demonstrate how they are using new standards, based on five benchmarks. They are: conducting business in a fair, responsible manner; commitment that all students can learn, regardless of circumstance or resources; commitment to continuous improvement at all schools; providing for safety and security of all students and employees; and effective collaboration with families, community members and use of community resources.

Submissions were evaluated by an independent panel.

Members of the Vancouver board during the past year are Dale Rice, Mari Greves, Edri Geiger, Mark Stoker, and Kathy Gillespie; the superintendent is Steven Webb.

The award includes a gift of $1,500 from the Washington School Boards’ Educational Foundation. The board plans to direct the cash to an appropriate district need, Greves said.
