Fire destroyed the home of Sam and Sonja Cnossen early Wednesday morning.

Fire officials said the blaze north of Battle Ground was caused by heat from a wood stove chimney igniting the adjacent structure, according to a preliminary investigation.

The 4,430-square-foot home at 13472 N.E. Mountain View Drive was fully involved when crews from Clark County Fire Districts 3 and 10 reached the home at about 4 a.m. A working smoke detector contributed to the family’s evacuation, according to a news release.

Sonja and Sam Cnossen, who are both retired, escaped with their dog, Otis, a white Labrador.

The house was valued at $450,000 and contents at $340,000, officials said.

Sonja said the family has 5 acres and items ruined included a tractor, riding lawn mower and a record collection.

Asked if the family would rebuild, Sonja said, “It’s too soon to know. We’re going to be digging through the rubble.

“We have friends who have taken us in,” Sonja said. “We’re doing quite well, as well as can be expected. … We had wonderful neighbors come over and help and wonderful friends help. The Red Cross, they were wonderful, and the fire department did an outstanding job.”

Icy steep roads and a frozen fire hydrant complicated efforts to fight the fire.

A total of 40 firefighters and 13 apparatus responded to the fire, including crews from Clark County Fire District 13 and Clark County Fire & Rescue.

Mop-up operations continued until 11 a.m.
