’Tis better to give than receive, TisBest says

Firm’s gift cards allow recipients to aid local charities

It all started four years ago with Erik Marks’ feeling of dread around the holiday season. People are giving way too much stuff for Christmas, he said. Stuff everywhere — sweaters, toys, trinkets — that nobody really needed. So, with the goal of shaking the feelings of claustrophobia and doom he felt every winter, Marks founded TisBest, a charitable gift card company. It’s his way of cutting down gratuitous gift giving.

A Vancouver resident received the message and forwarded it to the Vancouver Police Department.

Northwest Pipe details accounting woes

Lack of financial controls, communication cited

The accounting crisis that consumed Northwest Pipe Co. for months — casting its Nasdaq listing in doubt, eliciting a federal investigation and attracting lawsuits — grew out of multiple problems, including a lack of internal financial controls and a dearth of communication between staff members of the Vancouver-based maker of steel pipe, according to documents and statements that are now emerging. “We did not have effective controls over our cash flow statements,” the company said in its belated 2009 annual report, not filed until earlier this month, and “we did not have proper preparation and review procedures in place to ensure an accurate preparation of our consolidated statements of cash flows” as required by generally accepted accounting principles.

Less Black Mountain not enough

On its first two albums, Canadian psych-rock band Black Mountain offered several long jams, clocking in at the seven- or eight-minute mark, that either featured spacey psychedelic atmospherics or guitar riffs equal parts prog and metal. Only two songs in the band’s third effort, “Wilderness Heart,” go beyond five minutes. As a result, many of the 10 downsized tracks come across as straightforward rockers, which, in an indie world still transfixed by electronic noise and dreamy haze, proves to be a refresher when the band executes.
