In our view: Cheers & Jeers
Hospitals fight flu; text-while-driving teens learn crucial lesson; Mielke’s taxing faux pas
Cheers: To Southwest Washington Medical Center and Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center for requiring employees to either get immunized against the flu or take other flu-fighting precautions. The requirement has become a trend across Washington hospitals, and for good reason: many patients are at severe risk from what would be an annoyance to the healthy. It’s hard to believe, but the voluntary campaigns of past years have resulted in less than a 50 percent vaccination rate for U.S. hospital workers, according to the Washington State Hospital Association. So far, about 70 percent of Southwest employees have received the flu vaccine; Legacy reports 56.5 percent across its many facilities. For those who don’t want the shot or can’t receive it — someone allergic to eggs, for example — there are other precautions, such as wearing a mask around patients. Jeers: To texting and driving. The dangers of undertaking these conflicting behaviors at the same time are well known, leading Washington to ban the practice two years ago.
