VANCOUVER — A wave of candlelight will sweep around the globe on Sunday, Dec. 12, as people hold vigils to remember children who have died.

The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting aims to unite people for one hour to honor children who died at any age, from any cause. It’s intended to be the largest mass candlelighting on Earth, with a wave of light circling the planet as candles burn everywhere at 7 p.m. local time.

A Vancouver event is planned at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 426 East Fourth Plain Blvd. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and a welcome will be offered at 6:45 p.m. Candles will be lit at 7 p.m. and there will be readings of names, music, and other readings. A reception will follow.

The local event is being organized by Lorna Bradford and Kathy Deschner. To have a child’s name read, contact Deschner, 360-573-3206 or kathy_deschner@yahoo.com, or Bradford, 360-213-9587 or lorna979@hotmail.com.

The tradition, begun online in 1997, is sponsored by Compassionate Friends, a support network for families who have suffered the death of a child. Visit http://compassionatefriends.org to learn more.
