SEATTLE (AP) — The city of Seattle is considering whether to make it illegal for landlords and employers to discriminate against people convicted of nonviolent and nonsexual crimes because of their criminal records.
The Seattle Times says the city’s Human Rights Commission is holding a public forum on the proposal Tuesday evening. The city’s Office of Civil Rights is drafting a measure to add some felons to the city’s of protected classes.
Some landlords say the implications for property owners could be significant, taking away their control over who they rent to. But advocates for the homeless and other backers of the proposal say that having stable housing is critical for keeping people from offending again.
