Firefighters think pink for breast cancer fight

Starting today, firefighters from Clark County Fire District 6 will make a bold fashion statement in a nod to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Instead of blue, they’ll wear pink.

The disease struck near to the department earlier this year when Battalion Chief Todd Iremonger’s wife, Christina, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. A mammogram several months earlier had come back clean, according to a news release.

Christina Iremonger has no family history of the disease. “It’s going to take years for her to recover from the chemotherapy and radiation treatments,” Todd Iremonger said in the release.

Todd Iremonger will talk about his wife’s battle with the disease and campaign to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation at 9:30 a.m. today at one of the department’s stations, 8800 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave.

The pink T-shirts firefighters will wear during the first week of this month will be on sale for $15, with $12 going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Shirts can be ordered at http://www.fired-upgraphics.com/cancerT.html.

So far, 200 of the T-shirts have sold.
