BURNS, Ore. (AP) — Two teenage girls have died in a car fire near Burns after the car’s driver struck a steel gate and flipped the vehicle.

Harney County Sheriff Dave Glerup tells KTVZ-TV that neither alcohol nor excessive speed were factors in the Friday night crash.

The crash and ensuing fire killed 17-year-old Ruth Jones-Cray and 16-year-old Tia M. Crawford. The 16-year-old driver of the car was not identified, and suffered a mild concussion.

Glerup says a neighbor heard the crash and tried to pull both girls from the car, but the engine fire consumed the vehicle before he was able to.

The three were driving in a 1990s Ford Thunderbird at about 7:35 p.m. when the driver lost control of the car.
