MOUNT ST. HELENS NATIONAL VOLCANIC MONUMENT, Wash. (AP) — — More than two decades after it was first planned, construction is underway on an amphitheater overlooking Mount St. Helens.

The Daily News of Longview reports that workers started pouring concrete this week for the 160-seat amphitheater at Johnston Ridge. The project should be completed by early next summer.

The amphitheater is part of $2.5 million in work the U.S. Forest Service is doing at Johnston Ridge with federal stimulus money. It will allow for informational presentations with views into the volcano crater without crowding the viewing plaza just outside the visitor center doors.
