NEWPORT, Wales (AP) — Jose Maria Olazabal became the fourth vice captain for the European Ryder Cup team on Saturday, returning to the role he said he’d never take again.

He lost out to Colin Montgomerie for the captaincy in January. He was vice captain in 2008, but didn’t want to be deputy again because he said it lacked responsibility.

The 44-year-old Spaniard was in Wales for business when asked by Montgomerie to help out in the second and third series of matches against the United States at Celtic Manor.

Montgomerie said it’s “fantastic” to have Olazabal, who played in seven Ryder Cups.

Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley are Europe’s other vice captains.
