BOSTON (AP) — Jason Varitek wants to return to the Boston Red Sox after completing his 13th season with them.

He finished that season on Sunday when he went 1 for 4 in an 8-4 victory over the New York Yankees. He nearly homered in his last at-bat in the eighth inning, but his drive was caught near the warning track in right-center field.

Varitek was working on a one-year contract and said he “absolutely” wants to come back. He has been the team captain for six seasons and general manager Theo Epstein said he could return. Starting catcher Victor Martinez is headed for free agency and No. 3 catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is recovering from thumb surgery.
