Ruling against Ore. care facility in woman's death

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- A Multnomah County jury has awarded $821,000 in damages to the family of a 75-year-old woman with dementia who died after wandering away from a Molalla assisted care facility in 2007.

Ruby Larson's family had sued Pheasant Pointe Retirement and Assisted Living Residence and its parent companies, Spectrum Retirement Communities of Oregon and SRC of Oregon. They alleged the facility failed to provide adequate care for Larson and prevent her from repeatedly wandering off.

The Oregonian reports that after a five-day trial, the jury Monday returned with an 11-1 verdict for the family.

Larson's skeleton was found last May in some blackberry bushes near the care facility.
