LONDON (AP) — Formula One team Sauber has hired Sergio Perez as Kamui Kobayashi’s partner for next year’s world championship.

The 20-year-old Mexican driver won four races to finish second in this year’s GP2 series.

Perez, who will become the first Mexican driver to compete in Formula One since Hector Alonso Rebaque raced between 1977-1981, says “Formula One is the dream of every young racing driver. And now this dream is about to come true for me.”

Team Principal Peter Sauber says Perez “has been on a continuous upward curve over the past few years” and is ready to make the step up to Formula One.

The Swiss team also announced on Monday a partnership with Mexican telecommunications giant Telmex from next season.
