BURNS, Ore. (AP) — Authorities in Oregon’s Harney County are investigating whether a fiery crash that killed two Burns teenagers and injured a third might have happened during a street race.
Sheriff Dave Glerup tells KTVZ-TV that investigators believe a race was going on when the Friday evening accident occurred. He says there are indications a second car was involved and that a collision took place before the car left the road and struck a gate at the county fairgrounds.
Glerup says the 16-year-old driver was able to crawl out a window, but the car caught fire. Killed in the crash were two passengers, 17-year-old Ruth Elizabeth Jones-Crayne and 19-year-old Tia Marie Crawford. The driver suffered a concussion. His name has not been released.
