Oregon transportation officials are convening a safety committee in response to a series of deadly accidents on Highway 30, one of the major routes to the coast for Clark County residents.

The highway follows the south bank of the Columbia River to Astoria, Ore.

Officials will share preliminary safety information at a public meeting at 7 a.m. today at the Warren Country Inn, 56575 Columbia River Highway. The venue is just north of Scappoose.

A 57-year-old Camas man died in a head-on collision west of Clatskanie in August. That was just a year after four Ridgefield teenagers died in a head-on collision in the same general area.

David Kim, area manager for the Oregon Department of Transportation, is working with state Sen. Betsy Johnson and Columbia County Commissioner Earl Fisher to form a safety corridor working group. It will include state, local and transportation planners as well as interested residents.

The department also will conduct a formal road-safety audit, focusing on how to use education and enforcement, as well as possible engineering solutions at key crash points.
