Tanner Maahs took the medalist honors with a 2-over 38 at The Cedars on Salmon Creek Tuesday to lead the Prairie boys golf team to a 163-181 victory over Columbia River, giving the Falcons the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League regular-season championship.

“We were undefeated (6-0) in league and we only lost one match all season and that was to Union by one stroke,” Prairie coach Paul Shapard said. “I’ve got three seniors (Maahs, Sean Prendergast and Tyler Porter) who have carried my team all through the season. They’re wonderful kids with GPA’s way up there. Their the kinds of kids who don’t like to see graduate.”

Prendergast shot a 41 Tuesday and Porter shot a 42, as did Brian Siedelman for the Falcons, who will conclude their regular-season with a non-league match today against Skyview.

Next up for Prairie is the 3A district tournament, which will be played Oct. 12-13 at Tri-Mountain Golf Course. Shapard hopes to advance his three seniors onto state.

“Tanner has been to state the last two years, but I think they’ve all got a good shot next week,” he said.

Union goes unbeaten in 4A GSHL play

Andrew Spicer shot a 3-under-par 33, and Alistair Docherty was 2-under with a 34, leading the Union Titans to a decisive victory over Evergreen.

The Titans made a little program history, as well, claiming their first league championship.

Union is 9-0 overall, and finished 4-0 in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League. The district tournament, which decides which players will advance to state, is next week.

Docherty and Spicer, obviously, have their sights set on making it to state.

“Those two guys carried us all season long,” Union coach Gary Mills said.

Union finished second two times in its first three years as a Class 3A Greater St. Helens League program. In its first year as a 4A program, the Titans are unbeaten.

The Titans also won the Titan Cup, a Ryder Cup-style match with four teams.

Alistair and Docherty were not partners in the team competition of the event, but they led both led their partners to victories. And in singles play against Skyview for the Titan Cup, both players won convincingly. Alistair won his match 5-and-4.

“We’ll go up against them one more time at district,” Mills said, referring to Skyview, which finished second in the league. “That will be the one that counts the most.”
