A privately paid Skyview High School band assistant made his first appearance Wednesday in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of sexual misconduct with two students.

Adrian B. Kelley, 23, graduated from Skyview in 2005 and began working with the band program last year, said Kathryn Murdock, general counsel for Vancouver Public Schools.

Kelley was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Clark County Jail.

Judge Roger Bennett set bail at $5,000 for Kelley, whose father was in court and said Kelley could live at home pending trial.

Arraignment was set for Oct. 12.

Bennett appointed Clark Fridley to represent Kelley, who faces six counts of sexual misconduct with a minor.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Mike Dodds told Bennett that there are two alleged victims in the case.

Dodds made reference to a band camp, but the arresting officer’s declaration of probable cause, which was filed in the clerk’s office, did not specify where the alleged abuse occurred.

According to the affidavit by Detective Todd Barsness of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, one student disclosed to a school counselor that she had been having a relationship with Kelley. The student then told Barsness and Deputy Brendan McCarthy on Tuesday that “she became friends with Adrian on a social networking site and began to speak to him about nonschool subjects,” Barsness wrote. “(The student) told us that she knew Adrian from school and although she is not involved in the band she has friends in the band and hangs out with band students and instructors on a regular basis.”

The student told the officers that a second student had been involved with Kelley.

The second student, who knew Kelley from her involvement with the band, told officers that she had also become friends with Kelley on a social networking site and became involved in a physical relationship.

The officers then went to speak to Kelley and arrested him after he said he’d had a sexual relationship with both students, Barsness wrote.

Kelley has no prior criminal history.

Murdock said criminal background checks are done on all people who work with students. Kelley was cleared to work at Skyview in October 2009, Murdock said.

After Kelley graduated from Skyview, he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. According to Columbian archives, he received a $14,000 renewable World Scholarship Tour Award to attend the school and study music performance and competition.

According to his Facebook page, he graduated from Berklee in 2009. He describes himself as a singer-songwriter.

On his page, it says, “I teach band nerds how to be more band nerdy.”

Kelley earned $1,125 a month, which was paid by the band’s booster club, according to court documents.

Dodds said Kelley faces charges under the “abuse of trust” statute, which applies to adults who work with students.

Sgt. Scott Schanaker said the alleged victims were 16 when they were with Kelley.

He said if anyone has information on possible additional victims they should contact Detective Barsness at 360-397-2040.
