MANZANITA, Ore. (AP) — Authorities have concluded that financial troubles a husband hid from his wife led to a murder-suicide in their coastal home.

Manzanita Police Chief Erik Harth told The Oregonian newspaper five creditors left voice mails at the work phone of 56-year-old Richard Hunter in a 10-day period.

Harth says the couple’s Portland house was in foreclosure, the couple were six months behind on their Manzanita house, and they had substantial credit card debt.

Hunter’s wife, 55-year-old Astrid Schlaps, was shot in the back of the head as she sat on a sofa.

Hunter was found in a stairwell. Nearby was a handgun police say was purchased in January.

She had recently retired. He was still on the staff of Portland State University.
