MIAMI (AP) — Darian Mallary paced Florida International to a season-high 235 rushing yards and a 28-21 win over Western Kentucky on Saturday.

Mallary finished with 97 yards on nine carries as the Panthers (1-4, 1-0 Sun Belt Conference) extended Western Kentucky’s losing streak to 25 games.

The Hilltoppers (0-5, 0-1) had the ball on the Florida International 18 late, but two defensive stops by the Panthers spoiled the would-be rally.

On third-and-4, Western Kentucky’s Willie McNeal was tackled for a 4-yard loss by Anthony Gaitor, and Kawaun Jakes’ pass to McNeal was broken up by Dezariah Johnson in the end zone on the next play.

Western Kentucky pulled to 28-21 on Jakes’ 53-yard TD pass to Dexter Haynes with 5:47 remaining.

Jakes finished with two touchdowns and 193 yards on 14-for-31 passing.

Darriet Perry had 64 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries for the Panthers.
