Fire destroyed a large barn southeast of La Center on Sunday night, Clark County Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Max Konkright said.

The blaze at 30211 N.E. Charity Road was reported at 6:06 p.m. and 18 firefighters arrived at 6:12 to find the structure fully involved, Konkright said.

Destroyed in the barn were several pieces of equipment, including a 1957 Ford tractor and a John Deere garden tractor. The barn also stored wood, about two tons of hay, and equipment for horse riding, Konkright said.

Horses that were in the barn were safely led out before firefighters arrived, Konkright said.

Firefighters tried to save a nearby horse trailer, although it later reignited and was destroyed.

Heat from the fire could be felt 100 feet away, Konkright said.

The 48-by-40 foot barn is on the property of Larry and Rebecca Salvagno, according to county property records. Their home was not damaged. The couple could not be reached for comment Sunday night.

There were no injuries.

The cause is being investigated by a county fire marshal.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office and American Medical Response also responded to the fire.
