LOS ANGELES (AP) — The head of AEG says he is pursuing a deal for the company to manage the Los Angeles Convention Center as part of a plan to bring an NFL team to downtown.

AEG President Tim Leiweke said Tuesday that he and City Councilwoman Jan Perry have discussed a plan to redevelop one of the convention center’s halls into an exhibition space that could double as an NFL stadium.

Under the plan, AEG would put up at least $1 billion for the hall’s construction and be awarded a management contract for the entire complex.

Planners of a separate stadium some 15 miles east of Los Angeles said Monday they’re tweaking their design to lure World Cup soccer matches. Leiweke mentioned the World Cup as an event that could take place in the downtown stadium as well.
